<br />
<br />
<br />
It's been a long time. Too long. I haven't blogged since I can remember (Blogger tells me it was late May), and haven't been meaningfully writing for longer than that. Why not?<br />
<br />
<br />
A couple of reasons. A good one would be that I've been working. About a year ago now, I wrote about <a href="http://thehomeofthebraves.blogspot.com/2013/06/i-dont-usually-do-personal-posts.html" target="_blank">wanting to pursue journalism as a career.</a> I had just returned from Harvard, and was planning to apply to Princeton in the fall. Now, having been accepted to Princeton and hoping to study journalism and history, I am interning at my local paper, the <a href="http://cullmantimes.com/" target="_blank">Cullman Times.</a> I've had the opportunity to do a lot of writing here, and that's a big reason why blogging has dropped off.<br />
<br />
Side note: I've come to realize that blogging is almost more of a job than a hobby. The time it takes to make it really good is time I've never been able or willing enough to give. (Lessons learned for my future projects.)<br />
<br />
Among other reasons why I haven't been working? Listia and laziness, most likely. That doesn't mean I haven't been keeping up with cards, though. I popped my a thrift store the other day and spent about 20 minutes going through loose commons. I ended up purchasing a bunch of old Huntsville Stars promotional minor league cards, some picturing Jose Canseco lurking in front of an old Burger King logo.<br />
<br />
I've also been following the season. I wrote an <a href="http://www.cullmantimes.com/localsports/x1760126756/WALLACE-STATE-SPORTS-Lions-working-to-honor-alumni-in-future" target="_blank">article about Craig Kimbrel's alma mater </a>days
before going to Turner Field for my first-ever game, in which Kimbrel
pitched a scoreless inning as the Braves beat the Philadelphia Failies
6-4. <br />
<br />So I guess the question remains, what's next for the blog?<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinAVbF-EhG7NekhpE2sf65ATIABqY-hxK2E-MT7TuXN-UVIuh33wp99CFl4iNMwH-WyTLWPqDnanlflDBoaioSp6ohHdH9sIHdVqPN9ESWVj5WqCqDUKoLh7tyPR3zVUXatYx9roG9L-CO/s1600/IMG_20140718_213046551.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinAVbF-EhG7NekhpE2sf65ATIABqY-hxK2E-MT7TuXN-UVIuh33wp99CFl4iNMwH-WyTLWPqDnanlflDBoaioSp6ohHdH9sIHdVqPN9ESWVj5WqCqDUKoLh7tyPR3zVUXatYx9roG9L-CO/s1600/IMG_20140718_213046551.jpg" width="180" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">View from the seats</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://viewfromacouch.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/toy-story-3-andys-room.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://viewfromacouch.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/toy-story-3-andys-room.jpg" height="179" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Like Andy from Toy Story, I'm now headed off to college, career, etc. I'm supposed to shut down the blog, box up the cards, forget about it and them, and enjoy the rest of life. And I probably will.<br />
<br />
But I don't plan to stop writing. I don't plan to stop blogging. Though I may choose to write about topics other than printed cardboard squares, I still enjoy pounding out words in a post.<br />
<br />
And unlike all the kids who had to pack up their cards before me, I will remember the many, many others who came back to the hobby and are part of the card blogosphere. I can email many of them and mail them cards when I want. I've struck up friendships, met up with some writers, and had a pretty darn good time.<br />
<br />
So don't consider this the wrap-up post. Consider it the transition post. Once I get a new project started - and ensure I budget time properly to do it well - I'll be sure to post it up here. <br />
<br />
Thanks so much!<br />
<br />

**Edit**: If you are still interested in swapping cards with me, I'll be able to trade until about August 15th. If you have traded with me before, my address will be the exact same. Thanks!<br />

Oh dear. Though it <i>is </i>a relic, I wasn't exactly holding my breath for a dinged swatch card of Vernon Wells. Maybe I should sell this card off to the Angels or the Yankees...<br />
<br />
For what it's worth, Vernon had a monster season in 2006 (he hit .303/.357/.542 and tallied 32 home runs). If I were busting this pack back in '07, I might have been able to flip this card, along with my Kmart stock. Assuming, of course, that these corners got mangled sometime around Christmas 2009.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This one ends with a whimper. Note that all four cards had dinged corners, and depicted guys who are out of baseball in 2014.<br />

Art Howe, of Moneyball fame, was one such Athletic. If you zoom in very closely, you might make out the blazing elephant logo. Perhaps the only major league manager to be played by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in a movie, Howe did not manage the A's in '03, leaving instead to skipper the Mets for two years and work as a bench coach for the Phillies and Rangers until 2008.<br />

Justice was also on the Moneyball team recounted in Michael Lewis' book. Incidentally, the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Bishop_(actor)" target="_blank">guy who played him in the movie</a> was <a href="http://content.usatoday.com/communities/dailypitch/post/2011/08/david-justice-moneyball-stephen-bishop/1#.U1MfOvldV1E" target="_blank">in the Braves' system along with Justice</a> back in the '90s.<br />

Another example of fun headgear! The Padres have worn some sort of camo uniforms <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Diego_Padres#Military_appreciation" target="_blank">since 2000</a>. The full <a href="http://espn.go.com/page2/s/worstuniform/semis/padres_kstate.html" target="_blank">2003 camo uniform looks like this.</a><br />

What a way to start. A Matt Moore floating head for my <a href="http://thehomeofthebraves.blogspot.com/p/matt-moore-have-list.html" target="_blank">Moore PC</a>? Fantastic! <br />

I'm learning quickly that the 2012 Triple Play puzzle piece cards, like the Halladay on the bottom here, are going to be the hardest finds. I'd really rather not buy a box if I don't have to, so if you have any of these off my <a href="http://thehomeofthebraves.blogspot.com/2013/10/2012-panini-triple-play-wantlist.html" target="_blank">wantlist</a>, let me know! Maybe I can finish this set before the next presidential election.<br />

Some Dale Murphy additions, including a neat oddball Rite Aid card. Any grammar police out there, please tell me: is the apostrophe in MVP's used correctly? <br />

I've had a couple of people ask me about whether I like Dale Murphy Phillies stuff. I have mixed feelings on them: I don't necessarily "like" them, but that doesn't mean that I won't take them.<br />

I thought this Pinnacle write-up on Davis was pretty interesting...who know Chili Davis was the X-factor for Minnesota? I'll consider it catharsis that I, a Braves fan, collect the supposed player that propelled the Twins to beat my team back in 1991.<br />

Finally, a Chipper Jones painting on a modern-day Diamond King. Unlike earlier DK cards illustrated by Dick Perez, this was done by <a href="http://www.davekramer-art.com/index.php?pid=home" target="_blank">artist David Kramer,</a> who still actively paints today. I wonder how much these baseball cards helped his portfolio...<br />
<br />

Hi all. Here we have a pack I won on Listia, 2000-2001 Topps Basketball. As I am not a basketball card collector and
only the most casual of NBA fans, this should be interesting. I do have
a mild rooting interest as a Bulls fan, but when a Heat fan friend of
mine said something about Derrick Rose being re-injured (in November), I
was not aware. So this pack will be interesting. I recognize Shaq -
wasn't he the conductor for the Boston Pops at one time?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy_cy4Uxyx6m54I-jUxDHe6k2-Z8ZqnG8Hli0J-pAdCfdwXOsYTY9dhG8NRbhNEO6Blo5ctZYqpxnkxDd1ottqF4SJhNKx1leaiJ-ubSwpccegh8oSzGaCnPE3WuGR_oQjxc0tvUYfrsNn/s1600/Basketball+Cards+001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy_cy4Uxyx6m54I-jUxDHe6k2-Z8ZqnG8Hli0J-pAdCfdwXOsYTY9dhG8NRbhNEO6Blo5ctZYqpxnkxDd1ottqF4SJhNKx1leaiJ-ubSwpccegh8oSzGaCnPE3WuGR_oQjxc0tvUYfrsNn/s1600/Basketball+Cards+001.jpg" height="320" width="202" /></a></div>
The back of the pack: odds of pulling any sort of auto/game used are about 1 in 400 for an auto or 1 in 500 for game-used. (Remember that.) Here we go.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2ODQwYPSGifTT1J8uuXdtnfy_4bZk0K2phIPxXk8EifM91ZsQ79f-PopnIlpNttjn4HNXiM8kMfRqSJtOKpYya2dgBah2rZtc4vEyp2a2NQYuugpXfcV3qEJ0B9jC2YAKnYpOObCJe3_T/s1600/Basketball+Cards+002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2ODQwYPSGifTT1J8uuXdtnfy_4bZk0K2phIPxXk8EifM91ZsQ79f-PopnIlpNttjn4HNXiM8kMfRqSJtOKpYya2dgBah2rZtc4vEyp2a2NQYuugpXfcV3qEJ0B9jC2YAKnYpOObCJe3_T/s1600/Basketball+Cards+002.jpg" height="320" width="236" /></a></div>
Card #220 Cedric Ceballos. The Hawaiian-born Ceballos is wearing that #23, which would be worn by Michael Jordan the next year for the Washington Wizards.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh34pRfWkQKO3mC8t1wX5TDufH-meU-r0BRkzmmlgFdltKjIZD2rtH71P5UQCd0ZbXAY6w8_XCI1fK2IJZnjSltkh43WO9GKV6ZbFehp5zSH7svxH73uDcCgWj6KgQYUPF1T-sepOpUc1Wk/s1600/Basketball+Cards+003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh34pRfWkQKO3mC8t1wX5TDufH-meU-r0BRkzmmlgFdltKjIZD2rtH71P5UQCd0ZbXAY6w8_XCI1fK2IJZnjSltkh43WO9GKV6ZbFehp5zSH7svxH73uDcCgWj6KgQYUPF1T-sepOpUc1Wk/s1600/Basketball+Cards+003.jpg" height="320" width="250" /></a></div>
Card #171 Jamal Mashburn. <a href="http://www.bigbluehistory.net/bb/Statistics/playernicknames.html" target="_blank">"Monster Mash"</a> going up for a dunk! I really love the 90s-era Hornets - Muggsy Bogues and all that. I will be hanging on to this card, but the rest are up for grabs.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio8nfj8_QNsa8YfXArmCaGRPv89SjkDOfxPSzGTowNiULAsHfabNfditSHnRmO490YT6bqivBKn3fZ7xrp4z1S7HyPggwYr8U6xybQPHq0bqiupgTij7Rt12i6S0YMswxUKkt2YK7fYqhyphenhyphen/s1600/Basketball+Cards+004.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio8nfj8_QNsa8YfXArmCaGRPv89SjkDOfxPSzGTowNiULAsHfabNfditSHnRmO490YT6bqivBKn3fZ7xrp4z1S7HyPggwYr8U6xybQPHq0bqiupgTij7Rt12i6S0YMswxUKkt2YK7fYqhyphenhyphen/s1600/Basketball+Cards+004.jpg" height="320" width="250" /></a></div>
Card #208 Damon Stoudamire. Stoudamire, like Muggsy Bogues, was on the short side, 5'10" to be exact. He's now an assistant coach for the <a href="http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/team/_/id/12/arizona-wildcats" target="_blank">Arizona</a><a href="http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/team/_/id/12/arizona-wildcats" target="_blank"> </a><a href="http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/team/_/id/12/arizona-wildcats" target="_blank">Wildcats</a>, who are doing pretty well this season. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here's the back of that card. Full stats and a nice-sized write-up, but the type is a little cramped. I like the design okay though.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7gEc9yuOwtq5oh08w6k6H-MwTWSpGfsZbM0114fJwxI5WV5esTqIzqp3kmZcpa-OoUS7x4Z2YAJIGhonbcR-upM4ukDjRR5nJQ9dF_2zEqNjGX6e32wjMAu5kMkbZiKmGibg9q08iFHE2/s1600/Basketball+Cards+006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7gEc9yuOwtq5oh08w6k6H-MwTWSpGfsZbM0114fJwxI5WV5esTqIzqp3kmZcpa-OoUS7x4Z2YAJIGhonbcR-upM4ukDjRR5nJQ9dF_2zEqNjGX6e32wjMAu5kMkbZiKmGibg9q08iFHE2/s1600/Basketball+Cards+006.jpg" height="320" width="236" /></a></div>
Card #193 Allan Houston. Still with the New York Knicks as an assistant GM, Houston's career was derailed by a knee injury just a few years after this card was made.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9nK2rvZDYC7-I32hZGbDqb_w217fv06n-H5QIPK1c7_sH5DcxZ7VJJlCYi-AY_JuYhSkMDCtObam85lZO-BR-lsfBOGFX8c594uJhUMALOsY_aR6GbjdyPtSl5lMry8Czq6qWBwjHgWWU/s1600/Basketball+Cards+007.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9nK2rvZDYC7-I32hZGbDqb_w217fv06n-H5QIPK1c7_sH5DcxZ7VJJlCYi-AY_JuYhSkMDCtObam85lZO-BR-lsfBOGFX8c594uJhUMALOsY_aR6GbjdyPtSl5lMry8Czq6qWBwjHgWWU/s1600/Basketball+Cards+007.jpg" height="320" width="236" /></a></div>
Card #260 Avery Johnson. Another 5'10" guy, Johnson hit the game-winning shot for the Spurs in the 1999 NBA Finals and went on to coach the Mavericks to the NBA Finals in 2005, where they lost to the Heat. Back before the Heat had Lebron and Chris Bosh, that is.<br />

These Second Coming cards round out the 295-card base set. This one is #288, Lamar Odom and Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Based on the fact that in 2013, Odom was still getting <a href="http://rapgenius.com/Eminem-berzerk-lyrics#note-2143296" target="_blank">dropped in Eminem songs </a>and Abdur-Rahim was being <a href="http://www.insidehoops.com/blog/?p=14147" target="_blank">named GM of some</a> NBA D-League team, Shareef was probably not exactly the second coming of Lamar Odom.<br />

Card #289 Tim Duncan/Alonzo Mourning. Two actual stars!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ8PKcTfzF1HTvHxscm9SFgqjxaSNIJryaxJcDrMUtdM_NACDqIm-Z4SHBvUEXMLxNESuqHH8SjiVGkJe67OKrE2SVHxgN4t9Fd3IVAr54OdjxAjSmeIQWzlC40faHeWHwug8vJCKaOF9a/s1600/Basketball+cards+010.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ8PKcTfzF1HTvHxscm9SFgqjxaSNIJryaxJcDrMUtdM_NACDqIm-Z4SHBvUEXMLxNESuqHH8SjiVGkJe67OKrE2SVHxgN4t9Fd3IVAr54OdjxAjSmeIQWzlC40faHeWHwug8vJCKaOF9a/s1600/Basketball+cards+010.jpg" height="236" width="320" /></a></div>
"Tim should eventually match Mourning's five NBA All-Star Invitations." Well, how about <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Duncan#Honors" target="_blank">14</a>? Also, I'm going to have to use the word "out-quick" today. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Card #287 Darius Miles/Kevin Garnett. I didn't know <strike>much</strike> anything about Darius Miles until reading<a href="http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1536669-nba-careers-in-review-the-dramatic-career-of-darius-miles" target="_blank"> this article</a>, but apparently "With Darius Miles on the roster, the LA Clippers were one of the coolest teams in the NBA." However, this conclusion just brought me down: "Darius Miles was a troubled young man blessed
with an incredible physical prowess. He was a player whose basketball
career could have been something special." *Tear*<br />

Last base card. Card #286 Steve Francis/Gary Payton. I like the Sonics logo, but I really have nothing else to say about this card.<br />
<br />Now we get to the good stuff. Remember, this was a hobby pack. So according to the back of the pack, overall odds for pulling an auto/game-used were something like 1 in 400, right? So here's what I found:<br />

We beat the odds! Unfortunately, check out that tiny print on the bottom of the card. Over a decade expired! Ugh...this is the kind of experience that inspires Bad Luck Brian memes.<br />

Also, this card was hanging out in the back, minding its own business. Since when has Topps had "Trading Centers"?<br />

Triple the Exclamation Points = MAXIMUM EXCITEMENT! It is funny to ponder that blogs like this have pretty much filled this void: I've traded cards, built sets, and met other collectors through blogging. As they say, the internet made it possible.<br />
<br />
That's it! If you need/want any of these cards (except the Mashburn), ask away in the comments or send me an email! Thanks all!Chunterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05202917826458943805noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3441461608927956841.post-2175226781115166142014-02-07T13:38:00.000-06:002014-02-07T13:38:10.087-06:00Cards from Wes and CONTEST!I think it's about time for a trade post. Contest too? Sure. Big 44 Sports Cards is throwing up a couple of jersey swatches: a Justin Upton relic and a Troy Tulowitzki card. There are lots of Tulo fans out there, right? Check it out: http://big44cards.blogspot.ca/2014/02/contest-tulo-and-j-upton-jerseys-up-for.html <br />
<br />
Also, I'm currently vicariously living through the blog pack breaks of 2014 Topps. Anyone who has some extra Braves to throw my way, hook me up, as I really need to take a good crack at my 11-year-old 2003 Topps set wantlist before I get collecting this new-fangled stuff.<br />
<br />
Wes of the great blog <a href="http://fantasticcatch.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Fantastic Catch</a> has probably sent me more card packages than any other blogger in my short time writing in this space. He did a great job recently with hooking me up with some new PC and Braves cards. Check these out:<br />

First, some PC additions. Matt Moore is slated to be the number 3 in the Rays' pitching rotation, a strong option now that Jeremy Hellickson is out for the first few weeks. Chili Davis will enter his 4th season as the Oakland A's hitting coach this spring training; it seems he's doing mighty fine, as the A's ranked<a href="http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/team/_/stat/batting/year/2013/seasontype/2/league/al" target="_blank"> third in the AL in hitting last season.</a><br />

Here's Juan Francisco, now in Milwaukee, on a card from that Silver Slate Blue Sparkle Wrapper Redemption thing Topps did last year. Does anyone know of similar 2014 Topps plans? <br />

Some 1963 Topps copycats, one from the Cards your mom threw out, and one from last year's Heritage rendition. By now I think probably everyone knows 2014 Heritage will have autos from <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exojwhevqF8" target="_blank">Keith Olbermann </a>included in the set...do we like this?<br />
<br />

Some nice Walmart Blues from last year's Topps Series One. These look fantastic, and actually scanned pretty well. (What is this madness?)<br />

Some nice 2011 Topps Chromes. These guys just got some nice new contracts, as the Braves outdid their mega-contract with B. J. Upton last season by <a href="http://msn.foxsports.com/south/story/heyward-avoids-arbitration-agrees-to-2-year-deal-with-braves-020414" target="_blank">signing Freeman an 8-year, $135 Million dollar deal, then signed Heyward for 13.3 Mil over two years.</a><br />

As a wise Peanuts character once sang, Christmas time is here. For me, that means time to break from school, college applications, and even (gasp!) the internet, for a brief while, to celebrate the season. This in mind, here's what's going on as far as my collecting goes:<br />
<br />
I'm still looking for cards to complete sets. I'm short 9 cards for my <a href="http://thehomeofthebraves.blogspot.com/p/1992-donruss-coca-cola-nolan-ryan.html" target="_blank">Nolan Ryan insert set</a>, a couple hundred for my <a href="http://thehomeofthebraves.blogspot.com/2013/10/2012-panini-triple-play-wantlist.html" target="_blank">2012 Panini Triple Play set</a>, and perhaps 400 or so for my <a href="http://thehomeofthebraves.blogspot.com/p/2003-topps-want-list.html" target="_blank">2003 Topps set</a>. If any blog readers and traders would like to help me put these away, I would love to have some assistance!<br />

Which leads me to my next item. My Trade Bait page has always been a bit spare, so I've been doing some re-stocking. Right now I have an under-construction sign up, but I have been taking in some new cards. So look for some new trade bait and "Up-for-grabs" posts in the future. <br />

Last, I need some real help for my <a href="http://thehomeofthebraves.blogspot.com/p/chipper-jones-baseball-have-list.html" target="_blank">Player </a><a href="http://thehomeofthebraves.blogspot.com/p/dale-murphy-have-list.html" target="_blank">Collections</a>. I credit you bloggers for getting me to the point where I am nearly out of space to hold all of my Chipper Jones, Dale Murphy, etc. cards. For those of you who collect a number of players, <b>how do you store your PC cards, coins, and other memorabilia?</b> Right now, I have all the cards stored in a plastic cassette tape case. It works and fits okay, but I know it really isn't ideal. I'll leave you with that question.<br />
<br />

Did you buy a lottery ticket this week? I didn't, but next time I might be able to if my <a href="http://www.dothanfirst.com/story/alabama-lawmaker-pushing-for-a-state-lottery/d/story/BfHOUaSfd0GbNIlwvS8W5g" target="_blank">state lawmakers get their way.</a> Honestly, I've viewed lotteries as a sort of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-style <a href="http://www.thehungryreader.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/golden-ticket.jpg" target="_blank">Golden Ticket</a> chase, for grown-ups. Anyway, rather than buying candy bars, I've spent the early holidays applying for college scholarships, and bidding for cards on <a href="http://listia.com/" target="_blank">Listia</a>. Merry Christmas to you. Here are some of my recent wins.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ5i1C7LszVq5i_eFgrOqb6_Ks5Sv8tVqxN1k8AmIFG9Z4kfJmp5e3J6LD3KxKFLRU5mhawLMm0vhYihYjLpOVyqpBJbT5nRnI5TkKozmh72F8ghEpGQfI4r0if3HwLT-oa4WEkfeszje_/s1600/Cards+008.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ5i1C7LszVq5i_eFgrOqb6_Ks5Sv8tVqxN1k8AmIFG9Z4kfJmp5e3J6LD3KxKFLRU5mhawLMm0vhYihYjLpOVyqpBJbT5nRnI5TkKozmh72F8ghEpGQfI4r0if3HwLT-oa4WEkfeszje_/s320/Cards+008.jpg" width="251" /></a></div>
To begin, here's a nice Dale Murphy relic. Bobby Cox was <a href="http://www.stltoday.com/sports/baseball/professional/la-russa-torre-cox-unanimously-elected-to-hall/article_943c3ec2-30c0-5d64-b85d-ed05f9087463.html" target="_blank">enshrined </a>in the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee a couple of weeks ago; that's the only chance for Murphy to get in now, and it's an outside shot too. If it weren't for those darn knee injuries, it might have been different.<br />
<br />
Speaking of injuries, CBS Sports is now <a href="http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/24380221/work-of-art-baseball-cards-commemorating-weird-injuries" target="_blank">plugging for sketch cards of bizzaro injuries.</a> I think my favorite was Glenallen Hill, who I will now always imagine <a href="http://www.realclearsports.com/lists/Top_10_Dumbest_SelfInflicted_Injuries/glenallen_hill.html" target="_blank">crashing into a glass table while dreaming about being covered with spiders.</a><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I snagged a card of a young Chipper Jones (in his Bolles Bulldogs high school jersey) and Rondell White, apparently on a spring training field with a makeshift Green Monster (?) in the back.</div>

A couple more Chipper Jones cards in a lot I won...it seems like SI for Kids used to do more baseball card tie-ins a few years ago than they do now. Also, it would be an interesting blog contest idea for someone to collect that Funny Photos set and re-caption all the cards. Just a thought.<br />

And a couple of Panini Triple Play wantlist needs. I still <a href="http://thehomeofthebraves.blogspot.com/2013/10/2012-panini-triple-play-wantlist.html" target="_blank">need a ton of cards from this set</a>, if you would like to help me out there.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We're now to the <a href="http://cardraven.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Card Raven'</a>s package. For my part, these 2012 Topps minis were gold. Braves cards plus 1987 Topps = gold, in my opinion.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj3CsWX-jO3fTxUiNFpGkwmQWCnz_CdgOos4tUR23iAyMRnETL4-4zpXbRgZNNidJGglQvNZ0bXc5AArSB2R5hb2msO0oc3MTfhDsMullnW1HPmHu4fUTkcmsgsmdGyEXoPaCxTKdBqbKG/s1600/Card+Raven+Cards+000.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="277" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj3CsWX-jO3fTxUiNFpGkwmQWCnz_CdgOos4tUR23iAyMRnETL4-4zpXbRgZNNidJGglQvNZ0bXc5AArSB2R5hb2msO0oc3MTfhDsMullnW1HPmHu4fUTkcmsgsmdGyEXoPaCxTKdBqbKG/s320/Card+Raven+Cards+000.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
May not be gold, but they do glitter. And (at most) two years after these cards were made, none of these players sit on the Braves roster.<br />

A Tommy Hanson black border from 2011 Ginter. The bearded redhead was nontendered by the Angels after posting an ERA over 5, making the Hanson-for-Jordan Walden trade last year look pretty decent in retrospect.<br />

Let's play a little, Where are they now? with these guys. Sammons, at last check had had knee problems (like Dale Murphy) and was a catching prospect (like Dale Murphy), <a href="http://www.gwinnettdailypost.com/news/2013/may/25/sammons-enjoying-new-job-with-the-marlins/" target="_blank">so he became a catching coordinator for the Marlins farm system</a> (unlike Dale Murphy). Lillibridge just got picked up, along with Kevin Kouzmanoff (remember him?) off the scrap bin <a href="http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/12/12/rangers-sign-kevin-kouzmanoff-brent-lillibridge/" target="_blank">by the Rangers a week ago</a>.</div>

This was a 2010 Topps Turkey Red insert. I really don't think Nate McLouth could be called a "Prominent Ballplayer" anymore, as he is on the back of this card. Also, I've never heard any player called a "Prominent Ballplayer" by anything but baseball cards.<br />

Blue and Gold parallels are great too. As a military brat, I'll say these are in honor of the Navy Midshipman, <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2013/12/14/navy-beats-army-34-7-12-in-a-row/4025693/" target="_blank">who beat the Army Black Knights</a> Saturday for an unprecedented 12th straight rivalry win. To put the streak in a little perspective, the 12-year span of victories over Army is more than half of all the Navy players' lives.<br />

I'll close out with one of the finest closers the Braves have had in recent history. I've been playing a copy of an old MLB Playstation game the past few weeks, rosters current as of 2001, and I had Smoltz come out to relieve the other day, and I believe he won it. I really hope to see Smoltz in the Hall in 2015.<br />

Also
some cards for my 2003 Topps set. Here's an Aaron Boone Reds card. Do

Here we get into some overlap with my <a href="http://thehomeofthebraves.blogspot.com/p/david-eckstein-have-list.html" target="_blank">David Eckstein PC</a>. If anyone has a copy of this card, I'd take one for the PC and keep this one in the set.<br />

You
don't see this pose very often on a card...if this shot was taken at
Coors field though, It couldn't have been a rare occurrence.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
And
a trio of Braves to finish it off. I don't know how I could not like
that throwback uniform Smoltzie is wearing. Interestingly, it doesn't
look like Bobby Cox has had any cards since 2010, according to the
venerable <a href="http://tradingcarddb.com/Person.cfm/pid/1259/Bobby-Cox" target="_blank">Trading Card Database</a>. Just wait till Bobby's <a href="http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/9926181/joe-torre-tony-la-russa-bobby-cox-hall-fame-ballot" target="_blank">eligible for the Hall of Fame</a> next year; Panini will be churning out unlicensed cards of him like there's no tomorrow.<br />
<br />
So there you have it. Give me the <a href="http://thelostcollector.blogspot.com/p/tino-martinez-pc.html" target="_blank">Tino Martinez </a>or <a href="http://timwallach.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Tim Wallach</a> collector any day, and I'll take your <a href="http://thehomeofthebraves.blogspot.com/p/chili-davis-have-list.html" target="_blank">Chili Davis</a> cards.<br />
<br />
It's our Wallach blogger who sent me some nice Brave cards recently, after I passed on some cards of the Expo to him a few months ago. He's on a mission. A mission to....<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A couple of Braves greats, including Babe Ruth. A few years ago Topps had fun with Ruth as a Brave, including this <a href="http://blogbeckett.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/chiclesubsets.jpg" target="_blank">dandy </a>of a card:</div>

Also in the package were a couple of Murph cards I needed for the <a href="http://thehomeofthebraves.blogspot.com/p/dale-murphy-have-list.html" target="_blank">PC</a>- a 1981 Fleer and 1988 Topps Big Dale Murphy. Does anyone have many of the Topps Big cards? I was struggling to find a sleeve large enough to hold Dale without smothering him.<br />

One of the many Diamond Duos inserts and a Braves team card from 2011 Topps Heritage. Tommy Hanson had a rougher year in his first season with the Angels, going 4-3 with an ERA of over 5.<br />

Back when I made this trade with Josh of blog <a href="http://pencenixpierre2012.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Pence, Nix, and Pierre</a>, Ryne Sandberg was still the Phillies first-base coach, and the Phils had an outside shot at the East. (The Brave-beating Dodgers were in the NL West cellar at that time, which is saying something.) Seems long ago now that the Red Sox have bearded their way to a 3rd World Series title in a decade, spawning awful Nike <a href="http://www.yawkeywaystore.com/uploads/product/13PLAYT317/youMayLike-1.jpg" target="_blank">shirts </a>and gladdening the hearts of Bostonians, and making my August <a href="http://thehomeofthebraves.blogspot.com/2013/08/what-i-learned-at-harvard-pt-2-tour-of.html" target="_blank">Fenway visit</a> feel approximately 4.3 times cooler.<br />

Tim Hudson has <a href="http://www.ajc.com/news/sports/baseball/mccann-hudson-six-other-braves-file-for-free-agenc/nbdZq/" target="_blank">filed for free agency</a>, along with Brian McCann, Eric O'Flaherty, and Paul Maholm. It would be nice to have a strong Huddy for the next year or two, but the Braves have a track record of not being overly attached to players (like Andruw Jones, for example) past their primes. I expect Hudson to sign elsewhere, but I wouldn't be shocked to see him return. The latter would certainly be nice, but the Braves' cupboard is full of pitchers for the 2014 rotation.<br />

Remember how Andruw Jones plays for Tohoku Rakuten? They have been playing for the <strike>World</strike> Nippon Series against the Yomiyuri Giants (who you may have heard of). Best I can tell, the series has gone to six games, and Andruw has become the <a href="http://yakyubaka.com/2013/11/01/10312013-nippon-series-news-notes/" target="_blank">fourth player to hit a home run</a> both in the Nippon Series and the World Series. (Hideki Matsui would be the only other one you might guess, followed by Johnny Logan and Roy White.)<br />

This was a nice add. I've mentioned <a href="http://thehomeofthebraves.blogspot.com/2013/07/calling-all-giants-fans.html" target="_blank">before </a>that I'm in the labyrinthine process of applying and being accepted to (six different) colleges. One thing about this stage is that I get a lot of mail. Today, I received no less than 10 pieces of mail, one of which was a <a href="http://listia.com/" target="_blank">Listia </a>win, and the other 9 of which were various college propaganda. This was a recent mail item that I couldn't resist a blog about, trade post backlog be darned. Here we go.* </div>

Until I picked up this <a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-Book-Baseball-Literacy-ebook/dp/B005CA3B9A" target="_blank">book</a>, that is. </span></span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5qZ_ACjjYxc49gM4Ss-q-JHVhDWrI477kp7DKgykeMvHHOZFBCwKHXSp9bGFpuktYUuts8ekO8SXpHsDoli8E__VsGI3K8kOZ-h4teti8HWlZTNjlMaCgpW-464AwRMCSni09zc0ob2yh/s1600/Untitled.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5qZ_ACjjYxc49gM4Ss-q-JHVhDWrI477kp7DKgykeMvHHOZFBCwKHXSp9bGFpuktYUuts8ekO8SXpHsDoli8E__VsGI3K8kOZ-h4teti8HWlZTNjlMaCgpW-464AwRMCSni09zc0ob2yh/s1600/Untitled.png" /></a><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span></span></div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Okay, so that's not completely true. Let me explain. I've been reading this book for some writing ideas and terms. Why else would you read I baseball book right? I really didn't know that the three had anything in common until I did some research prompted by author </span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Dave Martinez, who showed me the answer, which formulated the trivia question in the title. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The answer? All three are members of the "Major League Baseballers from Alabama" club, and Ozzie and Hank (both HOFers) of Martinez' "All-Alabama Team."</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">I had asked Martinez on a whim if he had any good baseball stories come out of Alabama. He replied, saying this via email, used with permission: </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">"</span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">To answer your question, I'm sorry I can't really share any stories
about Alabama baseball. I'm from California and have never visited the
region."</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">"</span></span>I will say, however, that I've recently been doing
research on the greatest baseball players from every state. While New
York, Texas, and California all have great squads,<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"> <b>I was most impressed by the All-Alabama Team, </b>which would
include: CF Willie Mays (Westfield), RF Hank Aaron (Mobile), 1B Willie
McCovey (Mobile), 1B Mule Suttles ([West] Blocton), LF Monte Irvin (Haleburg),
LF Billy Williams (LF), SS Ozzie Smith (Mobile), and SS/3B Joe
Sewell (Titus). And that’s just among position players. On the mound,
you have RHP Satchel Paige (Mobile), RHP Don Sutton (Clio),
and RHP Early Wynn (Hartford). Those are all Hall of Famers."</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">I couldn't resist adding Ozzie Smith, Oscar Gamble (of my Blogger pic props), Virgil Trucks, Jimmy Key, and now-free-agented Timmy Hudson. Also, besides Mule Suttles, the town of West Blocton (near Tuscaloosa) was also the old stomping grounds for Mel Allen, the Yankees broadcaster, and Sammie Lee Hill, a football player from Stillman College (which I wrote an <a href="http://uamjw2013.wordpress.com/2013/06/22/after-the-doors-were-opened-how-integration-at-ua-has-affected-historically-black-stillman-college-2/" target="_blank">article </a>on last summer)</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">As an aside, Martinez is also a SABR member, and maintains a website on top of that, which is worth a look. It can be found here: http://www.homerunweb.com/ </span></span><br />

Maybe I shouldn't be too shocked about the Braves' loss to the Dodgers Monday night. After all, they're still a very young team that was hit by a lot of injuries...you could say it was just a matter of time before they ran out of gas. Even Chipper Jones harbored no illusions about the Braves before the NLDS; he correctly predicted a series loss in 4 games, and got a <a href="http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/24051152/braves-players-boycotted-chipper-jones-first-pitch-in-nlds-game-1" target="_blank">team boycott</a> for his first-pitch appearance in return. <br />
<br />
One of the teams I'll be mildly rooting for the rest of the way is the Detroit Tigers, due to family-from-Michigan influences. One Tigers fan, ToppsGuy of the blog<a href="http://baseballcardsandlife.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"> Baseball Cards and Life</a>, and I made a trade a while back. Here are some of the results on my end:<br />

Minor was the lone winning pitcher of the Dodgers series, and the former Vanderbilt Commodore twirled 6+ innings of 1-run ball. Mike has lowered his ERA each year since debuting in 2010; I think he'll be pretty solid next year.<br />

Poorly-scanned Maddux parallel from 1993 Topps. Yeah, the rest of these are Archives. Do you like how they handled this design? For dual rookie cards, Topps chopped off the other (or two or three other players) to get the one they wanted.
